Atiya Ibrahim xan (1924-2010)

words submitted by a beloved granddaughter of Atiya Xan…

My maternal Grandmother, granddaughter of Sito Oramari (c\Colemerg, hakkari), was married at the age of 14 to Ali Abdulaziz Kittani from Amedi - todays Duhok province. She was brought to Amedi on horse back. They moved to Baghdad as her husband, Ali, attended the Royal Military Academy and later became an Electrical Engineer and General under the King of Iraq. These pictures are from Baghdad. They had 6 children, endured forced exile, imprisonment and the loss of a son under the Baathist Regime of Iraq. Four of their chidren were exiled, and two stayed with them in Iraq. Atiya Xan, came to Baghdad not knowing a single word of Arabic, she raised her children up despite all adversities. All of them to become graduates of the best schools and universities. She stood for resilience and loved her cigarettes.
